Diet and exercise

Losing weight is simple, and if done correctly it's predictable. It's all about having a caloric deficit at the end of each day, every day, until you reach your target weight. Losing weight is a great way to improve your social life, sex life, and everyday life, especially when you look at yourself in the mirror. Extra weight can damage your joints over time and give you aches and pains you might not have felt until your seventies. It can make you look older, feel older and act older.

While losing weight is usually about self-image, we should never forget the health benefits that come from the reduced chances of heart attack, stroke, and cancer. Exercise with weight loss improves our chances of a longer, healthier, and probably happier life. Losing weight is an inexact science that takes time. It should be approached in a steady and realistic manner. Making small changes to your diet by replacing cookies with fruit, for instance, and being more active will help you achieve realistic goals. Losing weight is important, but so is getting fit and that means you need to exercise at least three times a week too.

If you don't feel like you have energy to exercise, start out with some physical activity that will get you moving, but won't require a lot of energy. Then, once you're moving, you'll want to do more. Exercising actually makes you feel more energetic once you have made a habit of it. And it is one of the best ways to burn fat and lose weight, which will soon show on the scale. But, while exercise helps to lose weight, you will have to cut calories, too. Exercise alone won't do the trick.

Nutritionists, dietitians and other health professionals agree, that healthy eating, which includes counting calories (and a low fat diet), are essential for long term healthy weight loss. Calorie counting always works as a method of weight control, while you continue to use it. In fact, it's impossible for it not to work as long as it's done correctly.

It is a simple way for you to manage your weight. You need to establish a daily caloric requirement that you want to meet, and you need to monitor your caloric intake. Calorie counting is the only reliable way to do so. Losing weight by counting calories helps to build your knowledge and awareness of how many calories your body needs to function and how many are in the foods you consume. Arming yourself with that knowledge, will make any dieting effort more likely to succeed, since you'll know what, and what not to eat.

However, a diet can only be successful if you stick to it. The key to success, in many cases, is not the diet itself but the ability to incorporate successful behaviors into your life and stick to a plan. A diet is simply what you eat, which means you're actually, already on one; but your current diet has made you fat. A diet either works for you, so you achieve and maintain the weight you want, or it doesn't. If what you're currently eating is not working, you need to eat differently.

The bottom line is, if you really want to lose your extra weight, you're just going to have to discipline yourself and do what's necessary to make it happen. There's no magic pill that will work while you sleep, no one else will change your eating habits for you and no one else can do the exercise; you have to.

So start counting calories and start doing some form of exercise each day; watch what you eat and, most importantly, find some way to motivate yourself to keep going. Often, having a partner to diet with is a big help. But whatever you decide to do, get up and get moving right now. Only ongoing effort will take it off and keep it off. Doing nothing will only mean more weight gain as time goes on.
